High-performance polyurethane dispersions for demanding coating applications

Calorine Matthiesen – WORLÉE

Polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) have become firmly established in the formulation world – and for good reason: they offer an outstanding combination of mechanical strength, flexibility, chemical and water resistance, and versatile tuning options in terms of hardness, drying behavior, adhesion, and environmental performance.
The backbone of PUDs consists of polyols and diisocyanates, which are combined to create finely tailored polymer structures (Fig. 1).
These form segmented polymers composed of soft and hard domains, giving the film its signature balance of elasticity and durability.
Whether for wood, plastics, metal, leather, or textiles – with the right PUD formulation, even the most demanding surfaces can be coated with high functionality and aesthetic quality.
Worlée’s current PUD portfolio includes four specialized products designed for a wide range of applications (Tab. 1):
– parquet and furniture coatings: high scratch and abrasion resistance, block resistance, fast drying.
– Leather and textile applications: soft, elastic films with pleasant touch and high tensile strength.
– Sustainable coating systems: bio-based and regional raw materials, low VOC content.
– Adhesion primers for plastics and metals: excellent bonding to challenging substrates.
